That’s right… three. I’ve just booked a one act play written (my fifth play this year) by Anthony Fusco called “Straight Men Are Bitches Too.” The play will be performed in the Theatre at St. Clements as part of the Off-Broadway Strawberry Festival. You’ll have to come check it out on August 14th at 9pm. More performances will be announced if the play advances. Well, I better get back memorizing these scripts and working on these characters… things are busy!
‘Acting’
Matt books Rock-A-My-Soul, his 4th show this year!
In Union South Carolina, Susan Smith, a mother of 2 little boys, reaches out to the media and community to help her find her children when her car is carjacked. At the same time, Taylor Cooper is proposing to Julie Johnson, the woman he loves but something terrible happens to shake his world. Faith is the only thing that holds them all together. The soul-stirring gospel-rock musical is written and directed by Van Dirk Fisher, founder of the Strawberry Festival and artistic director for The Riant Theatre. I will be playing the part of the comedic role of Ralph, Susan’s neighbor who rallies the town to try to find her lost children. This is my fourth theatrical production this year in New York and I’m so happy.

Matt to Reprise Role of “Jeremy” for BoCoCa Arts Festival
BoCoCa stands for Boerum Hill, Cobble Hill and Carroll Gardens — yes, that means it’s in Brooklyn. Well worth the trip for any Manhattanite though to see the reprise of “The Divine Will of Ryan Morgan.” Just don’t drink the water. I just got done playing the role in my first Off-Broadway experience and let me just say, it was one of the best times I’ve had on stage. It’s got rock music, priests, porn, and me as a total smartass. More details to come soon, for now, just know that it’s going to be amazing and it runs July 17-26th.
Info on the Festival
The BoCoCa Arts Festival will take place throughout the BoCoCa community and encompass all aspects of music, theater, visual and performing arts. HDP plans to utilize unconventional venues, including bars, restaurants, theaters, empty store fronts and galleries, to perform and display various works. With this festival, we hope to foster and challenge creative expression as well as unite and support both the artists, residents and businesses of the community.
Busy, Busy, Busy… As I Begin “Ryan Morgan”
A Slight Headache closed last night but things aren’t slowing down. I began rehearsal for a new show called “The Divine Will of Ryan Morgan” on Saturday morning. The show will be performed in an Off-Broadway venue on May 7th — the same night as my cabaret show. So, I’ll be performing at 7pm and then running up 15 blocks to perform a completely different show at 9:30pm. As I approach my first year in NYC, it’s great to be working on so many cool projects. More details to come soon on Ryan Morgan — I play his smart ass best friend — it’s a good part and a really well written script.
Here are some photos from the upcoming show “The Divine Will of Ryan Morgan”:

A “Feel Good” Headache
I had my New York Theatrical Debut this Thursday, March 26th, appearing in Alyson Pou’s “A Slight Headache” at South Street Seaport Museum’s Melville Gallery. If you’d like to see it, you have until April 19th. Sometimes as artists, or even New Yorkers, we feel like the black sheep of society because we’ve made a choice to do something different with our lives. “A Slight Headache” is essentially the story of an ambitious, intelligent girl who wants to leave home to be a scientist. There’s one major problem however, her mother. The show takes audience members back to the 1890s where a mother and daughter run what is essentially, an upscale freak show. The mother and daughter are themselves “freaks” as they are attached by hair that cannot be cut (a knowing and playful twist on conjoined twins). As the daughter grows, she feels that she is merely a pawn in her mother’s enterprising ways and looks to escape.
I play the part of The Maestro. He’d hoped to play the piano and sing to audiences in beautiful concert halls, but now, he performs once an evening at a freak show… and it’s not even Mr. Ripley’s! For the rest of the night, he accompanies mother and daughter through their gimmicky show which the mother is often drunk during. The project was a lot of fun for me and I even got to write a large portion of the music that is performed. The show runs at 7:30pm, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Details are below…
A SLIGHT HEADACHE
March 20 – April 19
South Street Seaport Museum, Melville Gallery
213 Water Street NY, NY
A Slight Headache (www.aslightheadache.com) is a play of sensuous lyricism staged within a dime museum installation in the evocative setting of New York’s downtown historic district. The event aims to transport audiences back to a time when “the wonders of nature, the works of man” were displayed for profit with amazing theatricality. The classic theme of a daughter’s struggle for freedom and a mother’s quest for survival takes place among the strange, the unusual, the bizarre and the exotic. A new piece written and performed by Alyson Pou, directed by Jessica Bauman, with Gregory Cohen Frumin and Matt Falber.
Performances March 20 – April 19
Thurs – Sun 7:30p
The Reading
I recently portrayed the role of Kyle in Les Simpson’s new play “The Bad Hostess” with three other cast members in an initial reading of the script. The show reflects on religion, homosexuality, and family in a sort of holiday twist on “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner.” The show will be performed in December.
NY Career Heating Up: Two More Performances and a Promising Callback
Next week you might be calling me Captain Braidbeard — or you might choose to be a dick and make fun of the braids in my beard. Either way there is a distinct possibility that I could be performing the role and a series of other roles for Theatreworks USA’s National Tour of “If You Give a Pig a Pancake”, a musical adaptation of Laura Numeroff’s book by the same name. This past week I was called in and called back to read for the role. Things went well but of course you never know until you know. Also, at the end of this month I will again be performing with the comedy group Chocolate Cake City, only this time I’ll be performing sketch comedy with the group in the absence of one of their group members. One performance will be on a rooftop in Queens (address to come) and the other will be at the Broadway Comedy Club (53rd between 8th and 9th) at 6pm, Aug 31st. Let’s keep this party going… Whew! (flashes car next to mine).
Matt Eats Cake… and Performs
If you’re going to be in New York this weekend (say Sunday, August 3rd at 7om at the Broadway Comedy Club) I’d like to invite you to check out a special benefit performance for a comedy group called Chocolate Cake City. It’s a little something funnyman Rob Asaro cooked up back in Boston. The orginal troupe is responsible for “Brokeback to the Future”, one of my favorite viral videos. Chocolate Cake City, New York is just about to begin a new performance season with a new show format (it sounds exciting and I think you get a free slice of chocholate cake). So, to kick it off they’re getting together a bunch of cool people to entertain the masses. I’ll be there and so will an old (not speaking about age) friend of mine, Danielle Fattelson. If you happened to catch Invasion! The Musical in Los Angeles, then you may remember her as Janelle, the somewhat manly… er… masculine… ok, she played a butch lesbian and was funny as hell. She wore this wig and overalls and I remember nobody ever knew who she was out of costume — yeah, she’s that awesome. We’re teaming up to bring you all something sexy, smart and uproarously funny. So uh… you’ll want to be there. Anyway, I think the tickets are $10. Why do you expect me to know these things? Don’t send me emails asking… mom! Ok, well I think that’s all. See you Sunday.
Love and life,
Matt
New York Auditions Bode Well, Screenplay Underway
After two months in New York City things are looking fine. It’s always difficult breaking into a new scene but New York’s creative forces have definitely taken note of Matt Falber. I’ve received several callbacks and was cast in a show which my team and I decided to decline. I’m also currently working on a screenplay. It’s a thriller that focuses on those who have it all but still aren’t happy. I’ll be releasing more details in the distant future.
Management says “Go East Young Man”
At the end of the month I will be leaving Los Angeles to pursue new opportunities in New York City. As I’ve always loved musical theatre, and as I’m constantly being told by casting directors that they think I’d be wonderful in this play or that one — my manager and I have decided that I belong in The Big Apple. Los Angeles has afforded me so many fantastic opportunities – television pilots, short films, feature films, and stage shows — I will certainly miss all of the people who helped me get to where I am in this city in particular, my friends and co-founders in Laughs on Demand, Richie Ring — who’s going to be a huge comedian some day, Coby Byerly — a fantastic manager with Impact Artists Group who’s given me excellent advise and support, Danny Sussman of Brillstein-Grey, Seth Colton — a fantastic actor who gives to the acting community in so many ways, Lesly Kahn and her entire staff and studio for challenging me and treating me so kindly, Ken Werther for his amazing publicity that landed me on the cover of Variety, Ben Giroux and Gabe Oliverez for producing the hell out one of the hottest musicals L.A.’s seen in years, and my close friends Kyle Ferris, Darion Lowenstein, Joey Shwall, Kristen Nielsen, Wally Schrass, and Hannah Johnson. I’ll see you all on Broadway.
